Gun Violence Prevention
Congressman Shri Thanedar understands that gun violence is a crisis that needs to be urgently addressed. His stance is clear: keeping communities safe requires comprehensive legislative action. To this end, Congressman Thanedar has co-sponsored the Assault Weapons Ban, which aims to criminalize the importation, sale, manufacturing, and possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices. He also backs the Keep Americans Safe Act, designed to limit the availability of high-capacity magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition, reducing the potential for mass-casualty incidents.
Moreover, Congressman Thanedar believes in creating a system that prioritizes responsible gun ownership and usage. He supports the COOL OFF Act, which would impose a three-day waiting period for certain handgun transfers, allowing for more thorough background checks. In line with this, he co-sponsored Ethan's Law Act, mandating the safe storage of firearms on residential premises, particularly when minors or ineligible residents are involved. To further strengthen the integrity of firearm ownership, he also supports the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2023, introducing new background check requirements for firearm transfers between unlicensed individuals. Furthermore, he cosponsored the Ammunition Modernization and Monitoring Oversight (AMMO) Act, which would require businesses to conduct a background check on buyers and increase regulation on gun sales. These legislative efforts aim to protect families and communities from the devastating consequences of gun violence.
