Rep. Shri Thanedar Condemns Trump's Call to End Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) issued a strong condemnation of former President Donald Trump’s proposal to end birthright citizenship in the United States. The right to citizenship by birth is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and has long been a cornerstone of America’s identity as a nation of immigrants.
“Birthright citizenship is not just a policy — it’s a constitutional right,” said Congressman Thanedar. “As someone who came to this country with very little and worked hard to achieve the American Dream, I understand how critical this protection is. Denying children born in the U.S. their citizenship would be an attack on the very fabric of our democracy.”
Congressman Thanedar, an immigrant from India who became a U.S. citizen in 1988, has spent his career advocating for immigrant rights, equal opportunity, and preserving fundamental American values. He emphasized that eliminating birthright citizenship would upend the lives of millions of families and erode the principles that make the United States a beacon of hope for people around the world.
“Our country is built on the promise that anyone, regardless of their background, can come here, work hard, and succeed. We must reject any attempt to undermine that promise,” Thanedar said.
The Congressman remains committed to defending constitutional protections and ensuring that America continues to be a land of opportunity for all.
