Rep. Shri Thanedar Condemns Trump’s Inflationary Auto Tariffs
Washington, DC - March 27th, 2025 - I stand in strong opposition to President Trump’s blanket tariffs on foreign autos and auto parts. While I support efforts to strengthen the manufacturing industry and the jobs they create, this is not the way to accomplish that. Economists have agreed that these tariffs are unrealistic, inflationary, and will cause serious harm to the auto industry, a cornerstone of our state’s economy. If implemented, they will raise the average price of both foreign and domestic cars by $5,000 to $10,000, meaning higher monthly payments and higher insurance costs for every American.
Even cars that are “made in America” are typically constructed with a sizable number of foreign parts, as the US relies on cross-border trade with our allies to keep prices down for manufacturers and consumers. Higher-priced cars and parts will also result in fewer auto sales, damaging the bottom line of American car manufacturers. This decrease in sales will end up hurting American auto workers, because a decrease in profits means more layoffs and lower wages. In addition, these other countries will surely respond with retaliatory tariffs on other consumer goods, driving up costs for Americans even further.
The Trump administration is leaving Michigan families behind: we can’t afford these tariffs.
Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes.
