Civil Rights

Congressman Shri Thanedar is devoted to addressing both the historic and systemic inequities that have disproportionately affected marginalized communities. He has co-sponsored impactful legislation like the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act and H.Res.414, which not only calls for the United States to acknowledge its moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans but also specifies a $14 trillion plan to rectify these longstanding injustices. Additionally, Congressman Thanedar champions the Freedom to Vote Act as a crucial step toward equity. This legislation is especially relevant to marginalized communities, as it aims to improve ballot access, end partisan gerrymandering, and limit the influence of dark money, thereby making the political process more accessible and equitable.

In rounding out his comprehensive approach to civil rights, Congressman Thanedar has co-sponsored the Equality Act. This important bill aims to extend the scope of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections against discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Each piece of legislation that Congressman Thanedar supports serves as a building block toward a more inclusive and fair society where the promise of equality and justice is fulfilled for all.
