Rep. Shri Thanedar Champions Recognition for Tuskegee Airman, Captain Claude A. Rowe, Jr., with H.Res. 1018
Washington, DC - February 20, 2024 - In a heartfelt tribute to a distinguished son of Michigan and a pioneering figure of the Tuskegee Airmen, Congressman Shri Thanedar introduced House Resolution 1018. This resolution is dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary life and service of Captain Claude A. Rowe, Jr., a revered Tuskegee Airman who uniquely served two Allied nations during the tumultuous times of World War II.
"Captain Claude A. Rowe, Jr.'s story is one of unparalleled patriotism, resilience, and trailblazing achievements that transcended the color barrier," remarked Rep. Thanedar. "As the only known Tuskegee Airman to have the honor of flying for both the United States and Canada, his legacy is a beacon of inspiration not only for Michiganders but for all Americans. H.Res. 1018 is a testament to his heroic service and the indomitable spirit of the Tuskegee Airmen, who fought bravely both abroad and at home for the ideals of freedom and equality."
“While Captain Rowe was a humble person who never sought the limelight or individual honors, he would have been proud of his country’s recognition of his service,” said Claude A. Rowe III. “He understood he was able to serve his country because of the actions of those who came before him. He would want to give credit to the patriotism, service, and sacrifices of the millions of men and women of African descent who have served in every military conflict since the Revolutionary War and continue to serve what Captain Rowe called ‘The greatest country in the history of the world.’”
Captain Rowe's journey from the streets of Detroit to the skies over Europe and Asia is a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity. Despite facing systemic racism, he pursued his passion for aviation, ultimately serving with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force. His commitment to excellence and his contributions to the Allied war effort embody the courage and determination of the Tuskegee Airmen, who broke barriers and paved the way for the desegregation of the American military.
